Why Yoga?

Yoga is a set of methods, ideas, and stories dating back thousands of years, interpreted many times over, and brought to us through dozens of different traditions.

In brief, yoga is the practice of self-awareness toward the goal of reducing suffering—and embracing joy.

Yoga has been called the science of the self. Through a dedicated, individualized yoga practice, you come to understand who you truly are, what you really want, and how to let go of everything that’s keeping your from becoming what you’re meant to be.

My specific practice is under the umbrella of yoga therapy, which is “the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings and practices of Yoga” (IAYT). Yoga therapy is individualized, draws on all the different practices and modalities of the yoga tradition, and may or may not include any kind of movement or “posture” practice.

I offer one-on-one and small group sessions that use creativity, art, object-making, and life design to help you uncover your true self, recover your creativity and joy, and live as you dream of living.

In my sessions, I bring in the vast array of tools, frameworks, and practices that yoga has to offer—alongside my training in personal coaching, my background in creative and scientific work, and my work as a writer and artist. Every session is tailored to you and designed in collaboration. Although the focus is on art and object-making, we might use any combination of breath work, movement, dance, creative play, writing and journaling, mantras, poses, goal-setting, art making, and guided self-study, depending on what you need and what we choose to work on together.

“When all the knots that strangle the heart are loosened . . .”

Yoga is a practice for understanding and loosening what binds you so you can find freedom and joy. There are literally thousands of possible practices available to loosen those knots. I tailor each person’s practice to their individual needs, goals, personality, and abilities, using art, object-making, and design as starting points for self-exploration.

Therapeutic yoga, in particular, helps you develop the skills to loosen the knots that keep you from your joy.

It would be my joy to share these practices with you.
